How to Choose the Right Sofa Size for Your Living Room

Buying a new sofa is exciting – until you get it home and realise it takes up half the room. Sofa size is one of the most common mistakes furniture shoppers make, and it’s an easy one to avoid with a bit of planning upfront. Whether you’re furnishing a compact apartment or a generous open-plan space, this guide will walk you through exactly how to get the size right.

Step 1 – Measure Your Room First

Before you even start browsing, grab a tape measure. Note down the full dimensions of your living room, including the width and length. Then mark out where you’d like the sofa to sit – most people place it either against a wall or floating in the centre of the room facing the TV.

A good rule of thumb: your sofa should take up roughly two thirds of the wall it’s placed against. Any longer and it’ll feel cramped; any shorter and the room can look unbalanced.

Also measure your doorways, hallways and stairwells. There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a sofa only to find it can’t physically get into your home on delivery day.

Step 2 – Understand Standard Sofa Sizes

Sofas generally fall into a few standard size categories:

2-seater: Typically 140-160cm wide. Great for smaller rooms, spare rooms or as a secondary seating option.

3-seater: Usually 180-220cm wide. The most common choice for a main living area.

4-seater or larger: Can range from 230cm upwards. Works well in open-plan spaces or larger family rooms.

L-shaped / sectional sofas: These vary widely depending on configuration, so always check both the length of each arm when measuring.

When in doubt, go slightly smaller rather than larger. A sofa that fits comfortably in the room will always feel better than one that dominates it.

Step 3 – Think About How You Actually Use Your Sofa

Size isn’t just about the room – it’s about how you live. Ask yourself:

  • How many people regularly sit on the sofa at once?
  • Do you like to stretch out and lie down?
  • Do you have kids or pets who’ll be sharing the space?
  • Do you entertain often and need extra seating?

A couple who mostly watches TV in the evenings has very different needs from a family of five who spends weekends piled on the couch. If you love sprawling out, a deep-seated 3-seater or a sofa with a chaise end might suit you better than a longer but shallower design.

Browse our sofas to get a feel for the different styles and configurations available.

Step 4 – Allow for Clearance and Traffic Flow

One thing people often forget is the space around the sofa, not just the sofa itself. Here are a few clearance guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Between the sofa and TV: At least 1.8 to 2.5 metres is ideal for comfortable viewing.
  • Between the sofa and coffee table: Around 35-45cm gives you enough room to move without it feeling too far away.
  • Walkways around furniture: Leave at least 80-90cm for people to move through comfortably.

If your room is on the smaller side, keep traffic flow in mind when deciding which direction the sofa faces and whether a chaise or ottoman works at one end.

Step 5 – Consider a Modular Sofa for Flexibility

If you’re not completely sure what size will work, or if you move house regularly, a modular sofa is worth serious consideration. Modular designs let you add or remove sections as your needs change, which makes them a smart long-term investment.

The Lola Collection is a great example – it offers flexible configurations so you can build the layout that suits your space now, and reconfigure it later if needed.

Modular sofas are also ideal for awkward room shapes or corners that a standard sofa just won’t work in.

Step 6 – Quick Tips Before You Buy

A few final things to check before you commit:

  • Seat depth: Standard seat depth is around 55-60cm. Deeper seats (65cm+) are great for lounging but can feel uncomfortable for shorter people who prefer to sit upright.
  • Seat height: Around 43-48cm is average. Too low and it can be hard to get up from; too high and it can feel more like a chair than a sofa.
  • Arm height: This affects how the sofa looks and feels. Lower arms give a more relaxed, contemporary look; higher arms feel more traditional and structured.
  • Fabric or material: Think about your lifestyle here. Families with kids or pets may want something durable and easy to clean. If you want to complete the room, pairing your sofa with a well-chosen piece from our living room packages can help pull everything together.

Final Thoughts

Getting the sofa size right comes down to three things: knowing your room dimensions, understanding how you’ll use the space, and leaving enough room to move around comfortably. Take the time to measure before you shop, and don’t be afraid to use masking tape on the floor to mock up the footprint of a sofa before you buy.

The right sofa doesn’t just fit the room – it makes the room. Get the size right and everything else falls into place.
